MEET THE MONKEY

Our hero, Masaru, is a small-town monkey with big dreams. He wants nothing more than to become Japan's greatest star. At the start of the game, Masaru joins the Shiga Ninja Clan and learns to fight, hoping it will boost his reputation. However, he soon realizes that the Clan works only in secret; not a good fit for a star-struck monkey!

Masaru quits the Clan, and heads off to find fame in the big city. Along the way he meets a fast-talking rat who becomes his agent. Masaru's agent guides him from town to town, pitting him against Japan's most notorious bad guys.

GAMEPLAY: BRAND NEW, BUT SOOOO NATURAL

Edo Superstar is a mobile game for gamers. We designed it from the ground up for mobile, embracing new technology while maintaining classic game values. We built the controls specifically for multi-touch screens. We've eliminated the clumsy virtual buttons found in most mobile fighters, and focused instead on direct interaction with the characters. Gameplay is all about timing and precision.

We turned to Street Fighter 2 for inspiration as we developed our tight, responsive fighting system. RPGs like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts provided inspiration for our story, characters, and leveling system. And, to spice things up, we followed Nintendo's example by including plenty of secrets and unlockables, as well as light-hearted characters and humor.

SPEED, PRECISION, AND TIMING.

WHO THEY? THE E.S. TEAM

The core of Edo Superstar’s identity is Jed Henry’s art. Jed’s beautiful Japanese-style brushwork inspired every element of the game. While producing his enormously popular videogame parody art series, Ukio-e Heroes, Jed realized he wanted to try his hand at bringing an original game concept to life.

He pitched his early ideas to Jordan Calderwood, a lover of 90s era gaming, and the two immediately began churning out hundreds of pages of ideas. The resulting game concept was ambitious for two rookie game designers and they realized, “it's dangerous to go alone!” so they assembled a crack team of musicians, animators, writers, and a single godlike programmer.
